September 2004: Know Thy Neighbors

Thinking of buying a home in a new neighborhood? You might love the home, but how do you know you´ll love the area? A little legwork can spare you some unpleasant surprises.

Many buyers don´t consider their neighbors during their lengthy home buying to-do list. However, this may be as important in evaluating your purchase as inspecting the home´s structural integrity. It can be as simple as taking a walk around the block or reading the local newspaper.

A great way to learn about an area is to interview neighbors. Tell them you´re thinking of moving into the area & you want to know what they think, what their biggest concern is, & what they would change if they could. Neighbors always tell you the truth. Talk to area merchants, coffee shop patrons & the mailman. Talk to police officers about crime in the area. Make sure you look at the neighborhood during the day & at night.
